Nothing leaves your Mac.

What the Griotte app and this website do, and above all what they don’t, in plain English.

This is a translation; the French version prevails.

Last updated: 22 October 2026

In short

  • The Griotte app records your activity only on your Mac. The publisher has no access to it.
  • No account, no server for your data, no telemetry, no advertising.
  • This website sets no cookies and follows no one: it only counts, anonymously, visits and clicks on its main buttons.
  • When you subscribe, payment is handled by Stripe. We keep what the law requires for invoicing.

1. The Griotte app

What it records, on your Mac

Title of the active window, path of the open documentIf you allow AccessibilityTell projects apart within the same app
Website name (e.g. github.com)For each browser you turn onFile the time spent online

Calendar eventsIf you turn the option on, read on demandCount a meeting for a client
Clients, projects, rates, rules, focus sessions, breaksWhat you enterReports and amounts

This data is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Griotte/, on your Mac’s disk (encrypted if FileVault is on). It is never sent to the publisher or to a third party.

What it never records

  • Keystrokes, screenshots, the content of documents and messages.
  • Private browsing windows.
  • The apps, websites and title words you exclude; password managers are excluded by default.

Artificial intelligence

Assisted classification and the day summary (Pro plan) use Apple’s model built into macOS, which runs on the device. Griotte sends nothing to an online AI service.

Importing a history (Toggl Track, Timing, Rize, CSV) reads the file you choose and saves it on your Mac; nothing is sent.

iCloud sync (optional)

On the Pro plan, you can turn on sync between your Macs. It goes through your own iCloud account (Apple CloudKit, private database), never through a Griotte server. Window titles, documents, sites, notes and client names are encrypted on your Mac before they are sent: Apple can’t read them, and the publisher has no access to them. Sync is off by default.

Network traffic

  • Updates: once a day, the app reads a small file published on this website to find out whether a new version exists (Sparkle, an open-source tool). Nothing about you or your Mac is sent; like for any web page, our host only sees the IP address that requests the file. We count these checks with the version number only, to estimate the number of installs. Every update is signed and verified before it is installed. Can be turned off in Settings › Updates.
  • Licence: shortly before each renewal date, the app sends your subscription identifier, and only that, to get the licence for the next period.

None of these exchanges contains activity data.

Your rights over this data

Since it is only on your Mac, you are fully in control: Settings › Your data lets you export or erase everything. Deleting Griotte’s folder deletes everything.

2. This website

  • No cookies, no advertising pixel, no social media button.
  • Anonymous audience measurement: we count page views, visits (with the site you came from, for example Reddit), clicks on “Download” and “Subscribe”, downloads and subscriptions. Each counter keeps the page, the button, the country (inferred by the host) and the referring site, never your IP address or an identifier: it is impossible to recognise a person or follow them from one visit to the next. This measurement, run by us alone and limited to the website’s statistics, does not require your consent (guidelines of the French data protection authority, CNIL, on exempted trackers).
  • Update checks: each installed copy of Griotte reads the version file once a day; we count these reads with the version number only, to estimate the number of installs.
  • No third-party resources: fonts, images and scripts are served by this website. Your IP address is therefore not sent to another provider when you visit.
  • Your light or dark theme choice is stored in your browser’s local storage. It never leaves your device.
  • The host, Cloudflare, Inc. (United States, covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework), serves the website and the counters above. It may keep technical logs (IP address, date, requested page) for the security of the service, under its own privacy policy.

3. Subscription and payment

Payment is handled by Stripe (Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd., Ireland), acting as payment provider. We receive: your email address, your name or company name, your country, possibly your VAT number, the plan chosen and the payment history. We never see your card number.

  • Legal basis: performance of the contract (subscription) and legal obligations (accounting).
  • Retention: invoices and accounting records are kept for 10 years (article L123-22 of the French Commercial Code); other data for the duration of the subscription, then 3 years.
  • Stripe may process some data outside the European Union, with the safeguards provided by the GDPR (standard contractual clauses). See Stripe’s privacy policy.

4. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object to and port the data we hold (the data related to your subscription). Write to [email protected]. You can also lodge a complaint with the CNIL (cnil.fr) or with the data protection authority of your country.

5. Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with its date. Any change affecting the promise that “nothing leaves your Mac” would be clearly announced in the app before it takes effect.
